"Friending Jesus" by Sergio Arguello

A year ago on November 25th my father passed away.
The finality and fragility of life is something we are always reminded of.
People get sick, have accidents, suddenly die, even while young.  We can go at any time.

James 4:13-14
Boasting About Tomorrow
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

James 4:1-3
Submit Yourselves to God
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

People are lost and live life with no spiritual purpose

We need a friend like Jesus to save us and to give us a purpose.  He uses people like the ones here in this room to achieve this.

1.  Send Us A Message of Hope

When you think there is no hope Jesus saves us.
When others don’t believe anything can change us, Jesus can change us.
When you are hideous to your family and even to yourself, Jesus can change you.

Saves You From Your Stench

John 11:17-48
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18 Now Bethany was less than two miles[a] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

--Those who want to be righteous and friends of Jesus will be resurrected, those who are only religious will be troubled by Jesus.

--Lazarus had been dead 4 days, there was a bad smell coming from his tomb.  He smelled terrible!!  Despite his state Jesus saved him.  When no one else could save him Jesus did.

--Even Lazarus’ sisters and friends did not believe that Lazarus could be brought back.

--It wasn’t a lack of faith in Lazarus, it was a lack of faith in Jesus.

--We cannot change of our own will permanently, that’s why we need Jesus.  When we look at someone and say “that’s just Robert!  That’s the way he is.”  We are right in saying that because we are powerless to change our sinful state.  We are dead in our sin!  However, when we say that as Christians it proves to us our little faith in the power of God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit to change people.

--We have a major faith problem in our society and in the church today.  We have Oprahfied the church and in many ways ran Jesus out.  There’s a bad stench in here and we don’t think Jesus has the power to get rid of it by raising you from the dead.

Jesus said in verse 40 “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

DO YOU WANT TO SEE GOD’S GLORY?
WE NEED TO BELIEVE!
THAT GOD CAN CHANGE YOU, THAT GOD CAN CHANGE YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, THAT GOD CAN CHANGE THAT BROTHER AND SISTER, THAT GOD CAN CHANGE YOUR COWORKER OR SPOUSE.
YOU NEED TO ACT ON THAT BELIEF!!

2.  Sharing His Purpose

John 21:1-19
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.[a] It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

--Not everything belongs to Cesar!  Stop giving what belongs to God to others.

--To love Jesus means to take care of others (not to just think of yourself).

--Who are you helping to take care of spiritually?  Write those names down.

--Ask them if they feel taken care of spiritually by you.

--If you don’t have anyone on there get someone ASAP.

As Christians we need to have Christians we help mature and non-Christians we are helping to come to a true relationship with God, walking with them daily or very regularly to draw near to God.  We need to stop having low standards and expectations of ourselves.  Jesus said, “feed my sheep”.

With our new found faith we need to have high expectations of ourselves because Jesus has called us to a purpose and if He called us to a purpose He did not call us to fail but to succeed and bear much fruit.

Steve Lounsbury - The Way

"God's Masterpiece" by Kip Harms

WE ARE GOD'S MASTERPIECE:

HE IS THE POTTER WE ARE THE CLAY

Talk about Mike and Libby coming back from Middle East!
Talk about people already complaining about the Cold!

Slide:
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
10  For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Slide:
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV2011)
10  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Q: HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO US??  YOU!!!!

LET'S HAVE A LITTLE ART QUIZ!
LET'S LOOK AT SOME WELL KNOWN MASTERPIECES.
·       A Sunday on La Grande Jatte
·       Mona Lisa: Leonardo Davinci
·       Starry Night: Van Gogh
  • American Gothic: Grant Woods

Pt: It is interesting that we have opinions about things we know nothing about!
·        We watch a football game and Criticize the play calling!
·
Q: WHAT IS THE POINT:
PT; DO WE TRY TO TELL GOD HOW IT IS?????
                Slide:
Isaiah 29:16
16 You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!
Shall what is formed say to him who formed it,
"He did not make me"?
Can the pot say of the potter,
"He knows nothing"?

Slide:
Jer 18:1-12
18:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2 "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message." 3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, 8 and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. 9 And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, 10 and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
11 "Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.' 12 But they will reply, 'It's no use. We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.'"

Pt: This is not encouraging
Pt: God wants to Create a Masterpiece but we must be SOFT HEARTED!
1): SOFT HEARTS????????

USE THE CLAY:   WHICH ONE ARE YOU?  WHICH ONE AM I??

PT: MY CONCERN IS THAT WE ARE TRYING TO FIT GOD IN OUR LIFESTYLE
Jer 18:6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

Pt: God wants to mold you:
Pt: God wants to shape you:
Pt: God wants to use you:

1: SOFT HEARTS THAT EMBRACE TRUTH!

Q: How do you know if you are SOFT Hearted toward God??
Slide:
Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NIV2011)
26  I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
27  And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
Pt: We like rules: Because then we can have the illusion that we are actually
          following God!
Pt: But in truth: If we are following Rules by Man: We might not be following
           God!
TO OLD TO MOLD:
CLAY SHRINKS WHEN IT DRIES:

PT: We need to be honest with ourselves about where we are at Spiritually!
EXAMPLE: I have gained a few pounds since I have been here!
·        WHEN I was younger I could eat a food truck and not gain a pound. Now I look at a food truck and I gain weight.
·        WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE GAINED A COUPLE POUNDS.
·        I have not wanted to get on the Scale!
o   Why: Picture of a Scale PERFECT EXAMPLE OF TRUTH

2) SOFT HEARTS ARE TEACHABLE:

Q: WHY DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM BEING TEACHABLE????
           PT: WE WANT CONTROL!!!!
PT: DEFIANCE TO BEING MOLDED STARTS YOUNG:
Ex: two year old that constantly say No:  “Isnt that sweet?????
Ex: Teenagers: their brains have not yet fully formed but they think they know
                 Everything?
Ex: Adults: Have we reached a maturity that is so superior that we know
                 enough?
PT: God wants to Mold You Pt: God wants to mold you: Pt: God wants to mold you.
   Pt: EXAMPLES
·        Nick calling to get advice!  Pt: he has been around along time!
·
Q: What stops us from being molded?
Can the pot say of the potter,
"He knows nothing"?   Jer 29:16

Isaiah 55:8-9 8
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,
declares the Lord.
9 As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

PT: The older we get the harder we get:
          TO OLD TO MOLD:

Ex: When I was a senior in High School there were two wrestlers that met in the finals two previous years. And the same wrestler from Vermillion High School(Mark Manning) defeated Yanktons (Mike Spect).
Spect was recruited over Manning because he was teachable.

Q: Are You teachable????
Q: ARE YOU WILLING TO BE FORMED AND MOLDED BY GOD???

3: SOFT HEARTS THAT ARE WILLING TO SERVE!

EXAMPLES TO USE IN SERMON:
  • Jake May: get with his guys late after Mid-week
  • Matt and Christa Worthington
VIDEO:
Q: HOW CAN WE STAY SOFT HEARTED?
1.     REMEMBER: HE IS THE POTTER, I AM THE CLAY!
2.     GET WATERED??
a.     CLAY SHRINKS when it
b.     Maintenance:
c.      Humility through the word!

3.     MOVED BY THE CROSS OF CHRIST!
a.     Slide:2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (NIV2011)
14  For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15  And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
b.     We Forget::::::: NEVER FORGET
c.                -God's Love:
d.               -God's Grace:
e.                -God's Miracles:
f.                 -Gods Patience:
g.               -Gods Forgiveness:

4.     OBEY THE BIBLE!!
a.     Don’t walk away from truth!!
b.     Don’t ignore sin!!
                                                              i.       Slide:Jeremiah 6:14-16 (NIV2011)
14  They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace. 15  Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them,” says the LORD. 16  This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.
c.
5.     Get Cut by Sin!!!!!
a.
6.     KEEP PEOPLE AROUND YOU THAT WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO HEAR, NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR?

Slide:
Jer 18:6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

"The Greatest Love" by Doug Wens

The Greatest Love

Hosea 2:14-21
14 “Therefore I am now going to allure her;
I will lead her into the wilderness
    and speak tenderly to her.
15 There I will give her back her vineyards,
and will make the Valley of Achor[a] a door of hope.
There she will respond[b] as in the days of her youth,
as in the day she came up out of Egypt.
16 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “you will call me ‘my husband’;
you will no longer call me ‘my master.[c]
17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips;
no longer will their names be invoked.
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
and the creatures that move along the ground.
Bow and sword and battle
I will abolish from the land,
so that all may lie down in safety.
19 I will betroth you to me forever;
I will betroth you in[d] righteousness and justice,
    in[e] love and compassion.
20 I will betroth you in[f] faithfulness,
and you will acknowledge the Lord.
21 “In that day I will respond,”
    declares the Lord
“I will respond to the skies,
    and they will respond to the earth;
